2014 HFW Membership Tours
Bluff Street at Houston Street, Heritage Park Plaza
Members got to tour the space that was designed to be a public park to commemorate the establishment of the original military post of Fort Worth in 1849 as well as the upcoming US Bicentennial celebration in 1976. Fort Worth’s Streams and Valleys, together with the philanthropic Amon G. Carter Foundation and Sid Richardson Foundation, Charles D. Tandy, and Ruth Carter Steenson, commissioned internationally known landscape architect, Lawrence Halprin, to design it. Under-maintained for years, the park had been placed on HFW’s Most Endangered Places List in 2005, 2008, and 2009. In 2010, Heritage Park Plaza was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
