Waggoner Building Restoration

Repairs Underway at Historic Sandman Hotel Following Devastating Explosion That Injured 21

On Monday, January 8, 2023, a powerful explosion rocked the Sandman Signature Hotel located in the historic Waggoner Building at 810 Houston Street, Fort Worth. The blast occurred shortly before 4 p.m. in the basement area, believed to be connected to the Musume restaurant’s kitchen. The explosion shattered windows on the first and second floors, scattered debris hundreds of feet, and forced emergency closures in a two-block radius.

At least 21 people were reported injured, including one in critical condition and two in serious condition. One individual remains unaccounted for. Fire officials confirmed a strong gas smell in the area but have not determined whether a gas leak caused the explosion or was a result of it. Atmos Energy was on-site assisting with the investigation.

Musume restaurant was closed at the time of the explosion. Three employees were injured but are reported to be in stable condition. The blast severely damaged the surrounding streets and buildings, with bystanders describing a chaotic scene of bloodied individuals, collapsed infrastructure, and thick dust.

Fort Worth Fire Department emphasized search and rescue efforts and the need to verify that all occupants were safely evacuated. Mayor Mattie Parker assured the public that all emergency resources were deployed and that updates would continue as more information becomes available.

Ongoing Repairs and Restoration Efforts

Since the explosion, extensive cleanup and restoration work has been underway. The building remains closed to the public as structural assessments continue. Crews have cleared most of the external debris, and temporary barriers have been erected around the site. According to city officials, structural engineers are evaluating the integrity of the Waggoner Building to determine what portions can be salvaged and restored.

The hotel ownership, in coordination with local preservation authorities and safety officials, has committed to restoring the historic structure in line with preservation standards. Work crews are proceeding cautiously due to the building’s age and historic status. Repairs to the building’s façade, replacement of windows, and reinforcement of internal structural components are expected to take several months.

Meanwhile, Musume remains closed, and nearby businesses are gradually reopening as safety zones are lifted. The city continues to provide updates on progress, with a focus on public safety and the future viability of the historic property.
