Allen House – Monticello

Lee Allen purchased this corner lot in 1938; construction of his house began the next year. A builder’s permit. indicates that it was designed by Charles Armstrong, and constructed by C. D. Morton. The one and one-half story house is clad in polychrome brick veneer and Palo Pinto County sandstone of high quality; these were popular materials at the time for recreating images of European medieval cottages. Distinguishing features of the house are the central entry, embellished with a sandstone segmental arch with deep reveals, and an elliptical window with a delicate wrought-iron grille.
