Mitchell-Schoonover House – 8th

James E. Mitchell, a jeweler, demanded a high degree of skilled craftsmanship in the construction of this house. Built in 1907, it was designed by the important Fort Worth architectural firm of Sanguinet & Staats. A friend, Dr. Charles B. Simmons, purchased the property in 1920. Ownership of the home was transferred to his daughter and her husband, Dr. Frank Schoonover, in 1945. They occupied the residence until 1979, when it was converted sensitively to use as a savings and loan and professional offices. The house is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and is eligible for the National Register on the basis of its architectural significance. The house currently serves as an attorney’s office. It was designated as a Historic and Cultural Landmark in 1996. It is a contributing resource in Eighth Avenue Historic District (national), listed in 2006.
