Windsor Tourist Court – Lancaster

During the 1920s and early 1930s, the popularity of the automobile and improved roadways led to the development of a new enterprise, the “tourist court,” a forerunner of today’s motels. In 1930-31 Charles H. Stern built this small motel along the Interurban route. Stern worked as a trainman for the Northern Texas Traction Co., and his wife Effie managed the Windsor Tourist Court. Contractor J.J. Murrell constructed the five rows of cabins which had between three and five units in each row. Each gabled unit has a recessed carport and is clad in narrow drop siding. The roofs have wide eaves with exposed brackets. Stern sold the motel to Charles Collum in 1943. The buildings have since passed through several owners, but continue to be used as a motel.
