For 23 years, Preservation is the Art of the City has showcased Fort Worth's finest artists while raising funds for Historic Fort Worth, Inc.
Discover original artwork, meet talented local artists, and support the preservation of Fort Worth’s historic places.
For 23 years Historic Fort Worth, Inc. has hosted an art fundraiser named Preservation is the Art of the City (PAC) that showcases the vibrant art scene and local talent in Fort Worth and the surrounding area. The purpose of this art show and sale is to generate operating funds for HFW, a charity that is dedicated to saving Fort Worth’s distinct historic identity. Additionally, Preservation is the Art of the City establishes a marketplace for studio artists to sell their artworks and earn a living.
Every purchase helps Historic Fort Worth continue its mission of preserving Fort Worth’s distinct historic identity through stewardship, education, and leadership.
Historic Fort Worth is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

2026 Honoree
Thomas Helmick
Thomas Helmick is a local artist who has lived and created art in Fort Worth for numerous years. Originally from Ohio, where he received a BFA from Kent State University. His postgraduate studies were in New York City at the New York Studio School, Queens College Graduate School, and the Art Students League. During Thomas’s years in New York City, he studied with such prominent NYC artists as Jack Tworkov, Philip Guston, George McNeil, Harry Kramer, and numerous others who would happen by the school.
Dr. Asad Dean
Dr. Asad Dean is a Fort Worth–based medical oncologist and hematologist known not only for his nearly three decades of clinical work in cancer care, but also for his long-standing engagement with the arts and creative expression. A graduate of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, he has built a respected medical career while also serving as a community figure involved in cultural and philanthropic circles in Fort Worth.
2026 Juror María Elena Ortiz
María Elena Ortiz is a curator at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, where she has served since 2022. Previously, she held curatorial positions at the Pérez Art Museum Miami and Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros in Mexico City, and served as a curatorial advisor for the Horizon Art Foundation in Los Angeles. Her curatorial research focuses on African diaspora, Latin American, and Latinx art histories, and her exhibitions have been presented at leading institutions including the Andy Warhol Museum, El Museo del Barrio, and the DePaul Art Museum.
Historic Fort Worth is honored to welcome María Elena Ortiz as Guest Juror for Preservation is the Art of the City. With her extensive curatorial experience, scholarship, and deep knowledge of contemporary art, Ortiz brings a distinguished perspective to this year’s exhibition.
City Build returns to Preservation is the Art of the City, inviting children of all ages to design and build a miniature city using recycled materials and craft supplies.
Kids will explore architecture, creativity, and community as they create buildings, streets, and more. Families can drop in anytime between 2 and 4 p.m., and the completed city will remain on display throughout the art show.
